The club stepped up security measures before the Champions
League.
Security and security officials from British football clubs
and associations met their European counterparts last week in Munich, at the
annual stadium and security conference organized by Uefa and the EU. Officials
to review the latest tactics to prevent terrorist attacks.
Uefa is providing expert consultations and a dedicated
anti-terrorist press conference for housekeepers at clubs and football
associations in its 55 member countries.
Clubs’ security staff were advised to watch outside stadiums
on non-matchdays as well as matchdays for potential terrorists planning attacks
carrying out hostile reconnaissance.
In the UK, the National Counterterrorism Department, a
branch of the Office of the Government, provided security advice for the
protection of stadiums and stadiums in 2006 and recommends updates on the
prevention of attacks at football clubs, entertainment venues and crowded
places.
Uefa and European policy-making agencies promote closer and
more co-operative control in football matches, concluding that it reduces
stress and reduces potential conflicts with people support.
The EU-Uefa Conference warned clubs and police forces not to
allow this increased anti-terrorism effort to necessarily create a tougher
police approach at football matches.
Officials have vigorously argued that the police image of
bat supporters has created a more hostile atmosphere in football and urged
police to adhere to modern policy on safety, service and security.
